Pepper, Jalapeño, Hot (discontinued)
Jalapeño peppers are a hot spicy variety, used as a staple ingredient in Mexican cuisine. They are commonly harvested while they're still green, but if you leave them on the plant a little longer, they will eventually turn red - and extra spicy! Fruits are mature approx 75 days after transplant.
Pepper plants do best in full sun, and very warm soil. Keep your pepper plants healthy by adding a calcium source (like crushed eggshells or oyster shells) to the soil before planting.
Jalapenos can be grown in containers, and are great for patios/balconies, as long as they get plenty of sunshine and warmth.
Pro Tip: Grow your peppers in a large pot, and bring them indoors over winter to go dormant. The following summer, bring your plant outside again for a head start on more peppers! Jalapeño peppers are perennial but not frost-tolerant.
