PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

ALLIUMS

In fall, dig a hole 4-8" deep and plant the bulb pointy side up. Fill the hole with water and let it drain naturally. If the bulb floats that's ok, just readjust it to the bottom of the planting hole when the water drains. Cover the hole with soil and water again. Mark the spot with a garden label, if desired. No fertilizer or special care is needed. Alliums will be dormant all winter, then bloom in late spring.

DAFFODILS

In fall, dig a hole 6" deep and plant the bulb pointy side up. Fill the hole with water and let it drain naturally. If the bulb floats that's ok, just readjust it to the bottom of the planting hole when the water drains. Cover the hole with soil and water again. Mark the spot with a garden label, if desired. No fertilizer or special care is needed. Daffodils will be dormant all winter, then bloom in early spring.

FLOWER SEEDS

FALL PLANTING: In fall, after first frost, scatter seeds in a sunny site or direct sow in a garden bed no more than 1/4" deep. Seeds labelled for fall planting benefit from the long, cold, resting period of winter in order to trigger blooming. This process is called cold stratification. These seeds should be planted after the soil has cooled, in late-October. Seedlings will appear in spring, with blooms to follow in summer. Some perennials don't bloom the first year and this is normal. The best perennials are worth the wait!

SPRING PLANTING: In spring, after the last frost date has passed, scatter or direct sow flower seeds according to package depth, in the sunniest part of your garden. Most flowers do best with 8+ hours of full sun each day. Mark the spot with a garden label, if desired. Water thoroughly and keep the soil moist until sprouts appear, up to 3 weeks. Experts recommend protecting seeds and young seedlings from hungry birds and other wildlife.

HERBS

In spring, sow seeds 1/8 to 1/4" deep in well-draining rich soil. Mark the spot with a garden label, if desired. Water thoroughly, and keep the soil moist until spouts appear, up to 3 weeks. Herbs will grow all summer in part sun. For best flavour, harvest herbs before they go to flower. To harvest, simply cut off a stem, rinse, and enjoy it fresh, or dry a few stems hanging upside down to create your own dried herbs and herbal tea.

HYACINTHS

In fall, dig a hole 6" deep and plant the bulb pointy side up. Fill the hole with water and let it drain naturally. If the bulb floats that's ok, just readjust it to the bottom of the planting hole when the water drains. Cover the hole with soil and water again. Mark the spot with a garden label, if desired. No fertilizer or special care is needed. Hyacinths will be dormant all winter, then bloom in early spring.

TULIPS

In fall, dig a hole 6" deep and plant the bulb pointy side up. Fill the hole with water and let it drain naturally. If the bulb floats that's ok, just readjust it to the bottom of the planting hole when the water drains. Cover the hole with soil and water again. Mark the spot with a garden label, if desired. No fertilizer or special care is needed. Tulips will be dormant all winter, then bloom in spring.
