Early Wild Rose

Early Wild Rose

Early Wild Rose, rosa blanca, is a Native Canadian semi-thornless rose. These light pink roses are fragrant and will typically bloom in July, with the decorative rose hips adding visual interest in the fall. The flowers are highly attractive to Native bees and butterflies.

Early Wild Rose spreads via underground root suckers, making it an excellent choice for dry fields, clearings, and hillsides. This rose species blooms on old wood, so major pruning is not recommended.

Note: Seed germination of this species requires double dormancy as well as seed scarification. This is an advanced germination technique that is not recommended for beginners, but highly satisfying for the more advanced gardener looking for a challenge.

Scarification: To scarify a seed, lightly rub it against sandpaper or a nail file. Only scratch deep enough to allow water to penetrate the inner seed coat.

Double Dormancy: These seeds must spend two consecutive winters in the ground in order for the seed to break dormancy. Seeds that require double dormancy are best planted in the fall. This process can be artificially expedited by using the wet paper towel germination method; but rather than putting the seeds directly into a warm place to grow, do this instead: First, prepare the seeds including scarifying, using the wet paper towel method. Label the baggie of seeds and keep them in a refrigerator for 90 days; then move seeds to a warm (80F) place for 90 days; and then a second time in a refrigerator for 90 days; and then finally seeds can be sown in a warm location.

  • A Water-Saving Choice

This plant is drought tolerant, meaning it doesn't need to be watered often once it's established. This is great for busy gardeners, forgetful gardeners, or gardeners looking to reduce the amount of fresh water used in their garden.

  • Important Note

Seeds are packaged by volume and therefore all seed counts should be deemed approximate.
