Common Milkweed

Common Milkweed

Common Milkweed, asclepias syriaca, is the perennial host plant for Monarch Butterflies. The leaves of milkweed plants are the sole food for Monarch caterpillars, and the nectar-rich plants are an essenital food source for adult butterflies. These plants grow to about 3 feet tall, and their mauve pink blossoms have a beatiful fragrance! It's called Milkweed because of the milky liquid that comes out when a leaf is cut.

The Monarch Butterfly population has declined a staggering 90% over the past decade due to the loss of their natural habitat. Planting native milkweeds in your Waystation will help support these amazing North American butterflies!

Sow the seeds by scattering outdoors in late fall, and Mother Nature will take care of the temperature and moisture conditions. Blooms in late June.
