Canadian Cactus - Eastern Prickly Pear, Opuntia Humifusa

Back in Stock June/July 2024

Did you know that there are 3 species of Native Cactus in Canada? They are extremely rare, and endangered, but they can be found in Western Canada as well as in Ontario, embracing our ice and snow, unbothered by our freezing temperatures. Read on to learn more!

Most notably, you may have seen these cacti growing naturally at Point Pelee National Park in Ontario. This native cactus is currently listed as “Endangered” at both the Provincial and Federal level, and is documented on the Government of Canada’s Species at Risk Public Registry. Growing any variety of Canadian cactus at home is one way to help prevent extinction.

The Eastern Prickly Pear, opuntia humifusa, is a perennial, low-spreading cactus that has round flat green stems with clusters of barbed bristles. It produces fascinating yellow flowers with red centres, blooming in June or July.

Unlike the world's other Cacti, the Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus can survive the freezing temperatures of the North because of special antifreeze chemicals in its cells. It has been recorded to survive temperatures as low as -50C.

Canadian cactus grows in open, dry areas, often on rocky soil. It can be found sprawling on the ground at roadsides, rocky glades, rock outcrops, cliffs, old quarries, dunes, and prairie. The roots need to be dry during winter to prevent rot, so well drained sites are necessary.
