Bleeding Hearts, Valentine Red

Bleeding Hearts, Valentine Red

Valentine Bleeding Hearts, dicentra spectabilis, are a bushy shade-loving plant that blooms in springtime, producing beautiful heart-shaped red flowers. This classic perennial dating back to 1846 is a timeless plant that can last for many years, happily enjoying the shady part of your garden.

Another name for Bleeding hearts is "Lady in the Bath". If you look at the hearts upside-down, it looks like a lady (white part) sitting in a bathtub (red part). A fun little tidbit to share with your friends and neighbours, when they inevitably come by to admire your beautiful plants.

After blooming, Bleeding Hearts leaves will begin to turn yellow and die back, but don't worry - they've only gone dormant, and they'll be back again next spring, larger and fuller.

Plant the rhizome (roots) in a hole large enough so that the roots point downwards and the eyes sit about an inch below soil level. Backfill with soil and water thoroughly. Keep moist. These romantic plants may not bloom the first year, and that's normal, as they typically reach their mature size by the third or fourth year.

Pro Tip: Soak the root in water for 1 hour to fully moisten and “wake up” the root prior to planting in soil.
