Sunflower, Velvet Queen
Velvet Queen is a unique crimson Sunflower, with multiple branches of blooms, and grows to an average height of about 5 feet tall. It produces stunning copper-red flowers with gold and black accents. This variety is excellent for making cut bouquets because each flower will be a little different than the next, while still maintaining the deep red and orange colour patterns.
2021 was officially the “Year of the Sunflower” according to the Canadian Farmer’s Almanac and National Garden Bureau, so there’s never been a better time to add these sunny beauties to your home or cottage garden.
Sunflowers are heliotropic, which means that they turn their head to follow the sun, but as the heads become heavy with age they will rest facing East. They are native to North America and first grown as a crop by Indigenous tribes over 4,500 years ago.
Sunflowers are annuals and should be planted after the last frost date in the sunniest place in your garden. Sunflowers, as the name suggests, need a lot of sun and warmth in order to grow full size.
For a beautiful garden pairing, plant Sunflowers alongside Zinnias, Lavender, and Powderpuff Asters.
